Hello,
Looking at this forum convince me for buying a wl-500g deluxe, thanks you all !
Everything seems ok, and I want now to have samba running on it.
According to my box it is running version 1.9.5.4 of firmware. Looking though assus website and this forum, there should be no such version for the 500gx. Is this correct ?
So, before flashing Oleg's firmware I want to have a backup of my original firmware. Is it possible ? If not where can I find firmware 1.9.5.4 ?

You got a "wl500g deluxe V" it seems, this thing has Firmware 1.9.5.4 on it. Still haven't figured out what the difference or the "V" model is ... and I don't know if Olegs FW will work.

As stated by bender_h in http://openwrt.org/logs/openwrt.log.20051226 openwrt runs on Deluxe V, so I think it's safe to try Oleg's firmware. Am I right ?

OpenWRT has nothing to do with Oleg's FW. Until Oleg confirms it will work ( or someone who tried) I wouldn't take the risk. But over in the german forum we're having the same discussion, looks like some1 already put Oleg's FW on his gx V ... if he confirms that I'll let you know.

I have that version of the router as well, installed Olegs firmware and it runs smoothly a.f.a.i.k :)

well if the device carries this FCC then it is just a WL500g Deluxe
probably the 'WL500g Deluxe V' is only a software difference
also I haven't seen any signs of a WL500g Deluxe V ? does somebody has a picture of a Box ?

The box of the "V" version looks the same as others wl-500gx. I've taken a picture of the inside and attached it here. If you want me to detail a particular part, just ask it.

It works !
Everything runs fine. Settings were kept. Additionaly I can now save them (as with 1.9.5.4 it gave me a zero byte file when trying to save settings).
For the curious guys, i've attached some info I've grabed from telneting it, ie:
$ cat /proc/cpuinfo
$ cat /proc/meminfo
$ cat /proc/pci
$ ifconfig
