Ftp user account folder mapping?

I have never set up a ftp server before. Allowing anonymous access I can see all the directories and files on the external drive connected to the usb port (deluxe). As soon as I add a user and password to the account list when I login vis filezilla I get a blank directory. Do I have to do some mapping for what that user can see?
