I have a cable modem from Comcast (model: Terayon TJDOCSIS 700 Series) plugged into my WL500g which is then plugged directly into by computer (i.e., acting as a hub).

My complaint is that it very often severly restricts my internet connection speed. Specifically, when I have multiple connections open (e.g., multiple Usenet connections or when using a download manager).

For example, when downloading from Usenet using NZB-o-Matic with 8 connections open, many of the connections quickly time out and my maximum internet speed is only 80% of normal (about 1000 KB/s). If I'm downloading a file that's over a Gig, I have to unplug the stupid thing and switch to a striaght connection with my cable modem or else the download will time out before it finishes.

I bought an ASUS thinking they would make a quality product that wouldn't choke on some heavy internet usage. Any upgrades out there that could fix the problem? or is the hardware just not up to it?

I have it downloading at 2,2 MByte/second, so that should not be the problem. I do however have problems when I connect a webcam to the Asus. Tell us more about your configuration. Have you altered the firmware, have you connected additional USB devices?

I don't have anything else connected to the router except a wireless device that isn't being used.

To be clear about my post, the problem I'm having only appears when I have "multiple" connections open. For example, a program like NZB-o-Matic will open approx 12 connections (to simultaneosly download 12 Usenet articles at once). This can cut the download time of a DVD in half.

I don't remeber what port Usenet operates over? Maybe that's the problem?

Perhaps your provider limits the number of concurrent connections? I know mine does.
