Am I the only person with ongoing problems with the WL500g and Bigpond Cable? Or has everyone else given up on the WL500g or Bigpond? Asus FW 1.9.2.7 worked reliably (e.g., I could run a VPN connection for many hours without interruption), but it would drop the connection completely every day or so and I had to manually reconnect (with the WL500g client). Oleg's 1.9.2.7-4, installed 21 March 05, cured the need for manual reconnection every day or so but resulted in the regular interruptions (~2 minutes every 27 or 28 minutes) to browsing(timeouts), emailing (timeouts), VPN or VoiP (dropped connections). Ditto with Asus 1.9.4.0 and 1.9.4.6. It is a real hassle to go backwards in FW number to Oleg's 1.9.2.7-CR6b to try it when I have no confidence it will fix the problem (no mention of this in the FW versions notes). Asus do not help. I have no choice but Bigpond for cable. It's probably time I gave up on the WL500g and got my money back before it is too late to do so and get another brand that works (there are ones that do). Pity.

Hi, i'm in about the same problem as you are... My CABLE-connection is being dropped by the WL-500g every 2 hours with the FW 1.9.4.0 - but it didn't with the earlier version which followed the router then i bought it.

Don't understand why... created a topic today to ask if anyone knows something about this problem because i didn't managed to find any information either at asus-web nor here.

I suspect that many people are having the same issues (or they have given up on Asus or Bigpond). Casual users might not even notice any problem, thinking that the web site they have tried to connect to is down temporarily on the occasions when they get a time-out. Email clients try again automatically. But try running a VPN or VoiP and you will get cut off every 27-28 minutes. The only FW that did not do that was Asus 1.9.2.7 (which I think came from Rod Whitby and Oleg originally), but it dopped out completely every other day. I've just tested Asus' latest 1.9.5.0 and it still does it. :( I'm about to go through the hassle of going backwards in FW version number to Oleg's 1.9.2.7-6b, which Rod Whitby assues me is good (1.9.2.7-4 was not). This entails killing everything in the router and using the firmware restoration utility (back to scratch).

Update: Olegs 1.9.2.7-6b has not solved the problem (I was not confident it would, since there is nothing in the various revision descriptions that indicates anything to do with fixing the Bigpond client). VPN drops out on cue ~27 minutes. Timeouts on browsing and email send/receive at same intervals. :(
