Connection speed

I have a Cnet wireless card in my desktop, which supports 800.11g / 54Mbps speed (http://www.cnet.com.tw/product/cwp-800.htm). However, I have never seen anything over 11 Mbps when connected to my WL500g router. I just did a reset to factory defaults, so all settings in wireless (except SSID and WEP key) are defaults.

Does the wireless setting on the router have to be 54g only or check 54g protection (both sound unlikely to me)?

Any idea on how I can achieve higher connection speed? I want this in order to get faster transfer from the machine connected to router by LAN cable.
