Hi All,

I recently changed my connexion speed with my provider from 2 Mbps to "up to 8Mbps". I shouted at the for a couple of days because, even though they confirmed the modification of my line I still had more or less 2Mbps. So I decided to test a couple of things :

1 - I unplugged my WL500g and plugged my ADSL Modem straight on the back of my PC;
2 - Connected from my PC in PPPoE to my provider.

In that case my bandwidth (download from Internet) is between 5.5 and 7 Mbps which is what you can normally expect.

3 - Plug the modem back to the router, reconnect the routeur to my provider via PPPoE.

4 - Configured the PC on the LAN (connexion CAT5) with DHCP.

In that case my bandwidth (download from Internet) is maximum 3.5 Mbps

5 - Configure my laptop with wireless (with WPA)

In that case my bandwidth (download from Internet) is maximum 3.5 Mbps as with my PC connected in CAT5.

6 - Tried to change the following setting on my WL500g :
* Force speed of WAN port to 100 full, 100 half, 100 full, 10 half successively : doesn't work at all. The LAN work Only with autonegociation.
* Disable all firewall from the web page : same bandwidth

Any ideas ?

You can try to set up the asus as an accesspoint. Disable dhcp and and plug the cable from modem into one of the lan ports. This work if the modem has dhcp enabled as most have. If not, a lot modems like Thomson, Netopia, Cisco etc. can normally get dhcp configured.
Then your modem release ipadresses to your attached devices through the Asus switch/acesspoint. You need to plug your cable from your pc to wan port in order to access asus settings again. This has worked out perfectly by many.

Another solution may be to set the correct settings MTU, ppoe etc.
The last solution may be to set the modem as bridge. It will just pass the signal to your router so your router will have to do the NAT and firewall job.

I too feel a little lag or less responsiveness when connected normally through wl500 behind a dsl modem.

Hi there,

After a few tests with my laptop, I think the problem is caused by my PC's NIC. It's an old 3COM Combo (BNC / Cat5).

When I plug my laptop (DELL) and connect to the Internet, I get around 6.5 mbps on a theorical 8Mbps download, and around 640 kbps on a theorical 800 kbps (I think).

With WLAN protected by WPA PSK, I get between 4.5 and 5 Mbps. I suppose it's the WPA that causes a reduction of bandwidth.

On my PC I get around 3 mbps. I'm gonna buy another NIC, and give it a try tonight.

Cheers
