Wireless connection issue

Our router is installed to our downstairs PC, so I use USB wireless adapters for my upstairs PC and Xbox. However, lately I'm having problems with the connection disconnecting so I have to re-connect to the router manually on the upstairs PC every time, and have to log back into Xbox LIVE all the time because connection keeps been 'lost'. My internet is not slow in the periods it is connected, it just randomly disconnects.

Why does it do this?

Most likely a neighboring wireless router is causing interference.
The way to deal with that is to experiment with different wireless channels until you get it right.
Also, don't put a DECT phone base near the router as that can disturb the wireless signal.
