I have just got a Asus WL500g and have som problem to configure the ftp server to get connection from internet.
I have choosen to log on with no password from the net.
I cant understand why this will function since I use this adress.

ftp://192.168.1.1

There must be a lot of people using this adress. Can this realy be enough to get access to my usb disk and ftp server from the net ?

Please cansomebody answer ...

192.168.1.1 is an internal ip. 192.168.x.x is not routable on the ruters on inet.

you need to find the ip the wan port is using.. the one your getting from the ISP if you want people outside to get access

One way of finding your IP is to create a DYNDNS account.
Then you can reach your FTP from the internet using a 'normal' address.

You can create this at http://www.dyndns.org/

You can do this free of charge, and it works great. No worries to find your IP anymore.

Good luck.

Thank you very much for the tips about creating my own DYNDNS account.
I am now registered and have my own account.
The problem is that the system log is showing this message :

ddns[718]: the hostname specified does not exist

I have filled out everything in the DDNS meny of Asus, but still this error in the log.
I wonder if anyone knows if the account is activated immediatly when you registered.

Thankful for any tips to get this box up and run...

There are certain ip adresses that are reserved for use within local networks. One is 192.168.x.x, others i forgot about. So anyone can use 192.168.1.1 (in fact i do woo) in his local network. So you cannot access these ips directly from the outside.
