as some users already may have noticed all BIG downloads are currently unavailable for download (think of GPL stuff)

I want to reduce bandwidth, but to reduce bandwidth use I have to make downloads unavailable which can be bad sometimes..

I would like to hear everyone's opinion on this

Personally, I hate to pay for something like fast downloads if I can get it somewhere else for free. Even if it means I'll have to wait longer. I don't even register on the big download sites to get faster downloads. So, I voted 'No, I'll use the Asus sites'.

What we could do is starting a distributed FTP site where several users donate some bandwith and HD space to mirror the larger files. I know there are FTP servers available who will allow this (one central server with several auxilliary servers processing the requests). But stupid-ftp will certainly/definately/utterly/totally not do this  But, I guess, this will not happen as it will be too hard to organise.

Isn't there some sophisticated download system where you can specify how much traffic a certain user can generate in a month? This could mean that if someone wants to download something it will be fast, but if he does it often his dowload speed will be slower?

Just a few thoughts :o

No,

But I am willing to contribute the forum site.

What do you consider "large downloads"?

For most things below 10 - 20 MB 5 Kb/s does not really make me happy but it's also not a major problem.

No, but I would gladly donate a smaller sum because I got so many useful information from this site, and I like Oleg's 'easy-compile and make patches'.

Is there a Donate button? I don't see it anywhere :-(
