View Full Version : Cannot reach FTP server from internet
My ISP provided me with a ZyXel Prestige 650R-31 which i use as DHCP on my LAN. In the one LAN port present i connected my WL-500g and my PC's connect wireless to the LAN through WL-500g. When setting up a PC as FTP server i have no problems opening a port in the ZyXel router and running a FTP server on the PC. Works fine. Another story when trying to use WL-500g as FTP server. Doesn't work. Firmware is ASUS 1.8.1.9. Some stealth testing software said that port 21 was in stealth mode, and other ports were just closed. Any hints on this?

It is not easy to give you a straight answer to solve your problem unless I can deal with the same scenario but here you have some points to be aware of:
To set up an FTP server behind a firewall that has to be reachable from the Internet segment you have to:
i) use port forwarding (virtual server) on ports 20 and 21 for TCP packets.
ii) define rules in the firewall (WAN & LAN filter) to let the FTP traffic get through in case they are needed.
I have WL-500g in Operation Mode - Router. That should be ok (i guess) . I have forwarded port 21 from ZyXel to WL-500g. FTP port in WL-500g is 12. Firewall in WL-500g is disabled, so it should be quite open. But nothing comes through on port 21.
Easiest option for you is to reconfigure the Zyxel to bridge mode and make the WL-500g your primary router. This way you'll only have to enable the ftp server and your done!
I've got the Zyxel too, working in bridge mode, with no problems at all.
Sorry, i didn't give you the information that the ZyXel router is taking care of WAN traffic. So i guess i can't just setup WL-500g as my primary router. My ISP delivered the ZyXel router with a profile setting, so i guess i can't do much about using that as the WAN link.
Seems to me you should setup the WL-500g as accesspoint in your LAN but that shouldn't matter in this case. If you enabled the FTP server it should be accessable on the WAN side of the WL-500g. You can test this when you try to connect to the WAN side of the WL-500g from another pc in the network. Make sure you use a recent firmware because there are some older firmwares which have a bug where the firewall blocks port 21 on the WAN side.
If this works make sure you configure the Zyxel correctly.
I switched to AP mode, set IP address static and entered IP address of gateway (ZyXEL router). Voila! It works! Thanks a lot for the replies! :)
Well, if you run a server which has to be accessable from internet make sure you allways use static ip's.
Exactly. It has had a static IP address all along. I think the trick was done by switching to AP mode and entering the gateway IP address in the IP Config - LAN tab.
Well - thanks again. The forum (and you) helped me :)
