Hi all,
I have the Asus WL500gP Router with the 1.9.7.5 original firmware. Attached to the router I have a 500gB external Western Digital MyBook Harddrive (formated with Fat32).
I generated users & share nodes, to share several folders on the disk the our household. I mounted the shared folders as different network drives (under Windows XP SP2). Everything works fine, but...
But I have some wierd problem when I write files to the disk. The files seem to copy normally (it takes some time doing it wireless...), but when I check if it has been written correctly some files appear to be 0kB on the disk and don't work. This happens somewhat randomly, for example if I copy a folder with two 700mb files, often one copies as it should and the other shows up as 0kB again. File size doesn't matter. I tried to copy over ftp, doesn't solve the problem.
Reading from the disk however works just fine.
Does anyone have a idea, what the problem could be?
Thanks for your help!

Cheers,
Alex

Install Oleg firmware
format the disk as ext3
install samba, or better use ftp...

thanks for your answer!
Does the oleg firmware support fat32? I would prefer keeping fat32, as I sometimes use the disk on various windows machines...

Another problem for me as a less experienced user: Can I install the oleg firmware and use it "out of the box" with a GUI? Can I do similar basic set-up as with the original firmware, without any coding?

The Oleg firmware has the same look and feel as the ASUS firmware, thus no need to worry :)

You can use fat32, if you really want it. Maybe create a partition with ext3 and another with fat32 for your windows usage. depends what you want.

If you use ftp (or samba) , you won't have a need to use fat32...unless you want to physically connect the usb drive
to a windows machine.

Note: ext3 just performs better under linux...

thank you for your answers avberk!
I think I might give the oleg firmware a try, would be nice if it solves my current problem.
Reflashing a original firmware shouldn't be more difficult than flashing the oleg firmware or am I mistaken?
I guess I'll keep the disk fat32, as I connect it to Windows stations occasionally...

Hi!

I have a similar problem.
I'm using wl500gP with original 1.9.7.5 FW.
I connected a 160GB external HDD, formatted to ext3.
I use 2 computers, Win XP running on both.
Installed "Ext2IFS_1_11.exe" to the computers, so I can read/write linux partitions. In the USB Application - Share Nodes menu I choose "Share all partitions in disk", and FTP Mode: "Login to first partition".

Q1: From Win XP, I can see the shared HDD, but I can't modify any data. What should I do, do solve this problem?

Q2: I can't use FTP from another place, to login to my HDD. Can you tell me tips, how to enable this feature?

If someone knows theese answers, please write it, because it's really important to me.

Thanks:
Csaba
