This is the firmware I'm waiting for!

* Changed connection tracking TCP timeout to 6 hours vs. 5 days

This will solve tcp connection run out problem when running P2P programs!
amule, enhanced-ctorrent.... will back to normal.

Thanks alien433, and also oleg's effort.

Settings should be preserved... Only thing I had to do is goto web interface -> System Setup -> System Command, and issue flashfs enable, followed by a reboot

But to be certain, it never hurts to make a backup

I performed an update yesterday. The settings are preserved. However, you should save the flashfs files before the upgrade, since it won't be saved.

Hi,

I'm using a wl-500Gp version 1.0

I get a bad Wi-Fi signal, using this firmware. Connection drops from time to time (signal is 35-40Db less than before, according to NetStumbler).
Original FW gives the same bad signal, DD-WRT gives me the strongest signal. For the support of the USB ports i need Oleg's.

So I did some research and used wl command's:

wl antdiv 0
wl txant 0

gives same bad signal, changing numbers into 1 or 3 give me the old (+35/40Db) stronger signal!

I'm a bit of a Linux noob so i have a question: How do I save the above commands in my NVRAM?

With this fw, you can't disable wireless:(

Can't you really disable wi-fi or simply the led stay on even if wi-fi is disabled ?

It's looks like false alarm, I'll try it when I get back my laptop. Probably only led:D

Changing txant will probably not give you the improved signal. It's antdiv that is the major variable determining the signal. It's the variable that chooses the best antenna choice (internal/external), option '3' lets the Asus choose antenna based on the best signal respons.

Try to reinstall fw from the beginning.
I updated some days ago, no problems at all with ssh and Samba, lately updated to Samba2 due to incompatibilities with Vista OS.

Same here. That's likely because USB storage is not detected at all, thus leaving device to boot up in virgin mode. No SSH, no Samba, no whatever extras you've been used to in custom mode.

Hi everyone,

I've just uploaded Oleg's new firmware to my wl500gp router (thanks Oleg for such a good job!), configured it as per the tutorials provided (thanks a lot for the authors!) and have an issue when my Internet connection is actually getting lost whenever I copy files from the router's samba share over wifi to my desktop PC.

Pretty much just as soon as I start copying - all Internet connectivity is lost. I cannot ping any host on the internet, hostnames are not resolved etc.

As soon as I cancel the copying - there is a very good chance that everything will go back to normal, however, just today I had to actually power-cycle the router to get it back to life.

Is anyone having similar issues?
If so, could you please advise how to resolve this?

Serpent

sergeos, you need to be more specific...
Some questions:
- what kind of connection to the ISP you have?
- what Samba version?
- router becomes sluggish after you start copying?

Also post here the output of top command, before and after starting file transfer.

Thanks for the response, Serpent!

I've got ADSL2+ Siemens Speedstreem Alcatel modem connected to the router via an ethernet cable. The modem is in 'full bridge' mode and is connected to an ADSL port at our local exchange.

Actually, what I've also noticed - is that whenever I start copying files from Samba, the modem actually indicates a disconnection from ADSL line, i.e. ADSL led gets switched off, Activity led as well and then in 10 to 20 seconds it's apparently trying to reconnect and then the whole process repeats until the copying is finished.

Samba version - not sure how to check it (I'm quite new to Linux). I'm using the one from the firmware. As far as I can tell it is 2.0.10-security-rollup

Below is TOP command results and also syslog messages registered when the problem occurs.

Not sure if the router actually becomes sluggish after I start copying as I can still connect to it via SSH and do diagnostics stuff, but PPPoE is definitely struggling during the copying as far as the messages above indicate :(

Thanks in advance for looking into it!

Good ideea to post the syslog!
Check in IP Config to have Idle Disconnect Time set to 0.
Have you tried to see if you get disconnected even with transmission stoped, or no torrent active?

Oleg: No, I forgot or I didn't know i need too :o
Sery: Yeah It did the trick.

So there were steps to do:
1) Temporarily enable inbuild FTP-server to engage USB storage drivers
2) "flashfs enable" command
3) Reboot, disable FTP, everything seems to be OK so far

Thanks both for advice ;)

I don't know if this is only related to this firmware version, but my internet connection seems pretty unstable. Sometimes connections go slower and slower and suddenly drop. If you retry downloading the same file within a second, it suddenly goes at full speed again.

Before this I used my SpeedTouch 510 as the router. Right now the SpeedTouch 510 is connected to a KPN ADSL connection and is set to DHCP spoof mode. The WL500Gp connects to it via the WAN interface.

Anyone any idea what is causing this? Could it be that the connection time-out or something from the ST510 is longer and my internet connection is unstable, but I just didn't see it??

Good friend, I also have the same problem after installing this firmware my internet was very slow. I have a SMC 7904BRA2 to operate in "Bridge Mode" and Router WL500G premium to make the connection to the internet. From time to time the connection is very slow and then returns to be here.

It seems that we find a problem in this new firmware.

Not sure if I have a defective wl500-gp, have got only one device to play with, but anyway. In addition to the problems I've discribed above,I have been encountering even worse issues with the device & firmware.

Not only I can say that my internet connection is unstable with the device acting as a wireless AP/router/whatever, but also, even if it is configured purely as wifi AP/samba/transmission, for some mistereous reason the device forces my Siemens SpeedStream 4200 router to drop it's DSL connection.

I can clearly reproduce it. The only thing I need to do to get my internet connection screwed up is to start copying some files from samba running on the wl500gp. Though it's not the only way to force the problem to occur. It occurs intermittently as I'm browsing the internet, or updating/pausing etc. transmission.

What's worse - the issue occurs even if wl500gp is not used as the internet gateway, it's configured purely as wi-fi AP/samba and transmission downloader. The internet router is hooked up to the wl500gp by a LAN port and I have got only 2 wi-fi clients connected to the device. For some time it works fine and then all of a sudden DSL light on the siemens router goes off, then the router reconnects, then it can happen another time, then become stable for an hour or so and then the whole process is repeated.

I'm quite reluctant to revert back to the original asus firmware as oleg's one is much more flexible in configuration. But because I'm having serious issues with either the device or oleg's firmware - seems that I will have to to revert back to asus FW.

Yes, and one more thing. My Internet connection is much more stable if I have my Siemens router connected directly to a PC or to my old and good NETGEAR router, without ASUS router plugged into it.

So, I'm quite desperate, redoing everything from scratch will be quite a hassle. Thus asking for help please.

Is anyone having any similair issues or am the only one to be such "lucky"? ;)

Thanks in advance,
Sergey

Sergeos, I was even wondering if you have find a solution to your problem...
Just another suggestion, try to play with niceness of Samba:
Look here. (http://wl500g.info/showthread.php?t=12189)
Or you can use FTP for file transfers, not Samba. If you really need to see files in Win Explorer (from FTP server) can use FTPDrive, NetDrive or WebDrive.
vsftpd is spending much less resources than Samba.

I hope this will help you!

Hi,
i noticed a strange behaviour on my router. Whenever i download large amount of data from several sources (2-3 torrents running, while downloading from 2 sharewebs ie. rapidshare), the PPPoE connection gets lost. When i'm trying to go into the routers WebUI, it loads very slowly, often with errors (like missing Asus logo). Pressing the Reconnect button on the Status page doesn't help, usually i need to restart the router several times to be able to connect to my ISP.

I'm using an 1.5/0.5 ADSL connection and i have to PCs connected to the Asus (1 through LAN, 1 through wifi)

Yes, finally I have figured the problem out.
When I noticed the ADSL router disconnecting from the ISP even though it was not plugged into the ASUS router at all - something clicked in my mind and indicated that I had been digging in the wrong direction...

As it often happens, the problem has turned out to be much simplier than it appeared to be.

It was bloody generic USB hard drive connected to the device. Apparently every now and then when the HD was being accessed, it was creating some noise (interference) and the ADSL router was picking it up.

So I changed the hard drive enclosure to a more expensive one (seagate) and finally my problem is sorted out (knock on woods...)

I can now copy files accross from the ASUS router and at the same time surf the Internet comfortably. Though the router is now is configured only as a WiFi access-point and torrent downloader.

Possibly will configure the router back as a full-blown router to enable wshaper when I have time, but not now. I'm quite happy with the way things are at the moment.

Thanks everyone for the help.
