hi guys I'm running into a problem I do not understand. my configuration
is

to keep it simpler all network adresses will start with 192.168. and all subnet masks are 255.255.255.0 There are 3 computers one running w98, one xp home or w98 (does not matter same effect) and one xp professional with two network cards acting as a router and of course the lovely WL500g with a static route enabled.

W98 XP Pro WL500g XP Home
(.251.6) ----- (.251.1)
(.252.1) ------ (.252.2)
WLAN (DHCP)------- (.252.114)

I hope the configuration is clear. The static route on the WL500g is

192.168.251.0 255.255.255.0 192.168.252.1 br0

The effect I'm faced to:

1.) w98(.251.6): ping 192.168.252.114 --> failure - no connect
1.a) w98(.251.6): ping 192.168.252.1 --> success
1.b) w98(.251.6): ping 192.168.252.2 --> success

2.) XP home(.252.114): ping 192.168.251.6 --> success

after doing at least once 2.)

3.) doing again 1.) w98(.251.6): ping 192.168.252.114 --> success(!!! :confused: )

now a new route was added locally to the w98 computer containing just the .252.114 address with 255.255.255.255 netmask! :confused:

So my question is what am I doing wrong? Where to search for the fault on the xp pro router or the wl500g?

To make it clear once doing 2.) and 3.) just in this sequence the routing for this two computers is working fine! But I don't like to to it every time.

use the webinterface (see attached, this is from a working environment: 192.168.0.231 is a VPN router)

Hello Antiloop,

thanks for your reply. For setting up the static route at the WL500g I used the web interface and the entries are corresponding to yours.

192.168.251.0 255.255.255.0 192.168.252.1 1 LAN

Where the 252.1 is the card at the XP PRO router.

So I still can't see my fault. And still I do not understand why the ping will change the routing list on the client?

how is your wl500g configured?
as gateway?

and how is your win2k pc connected to the wl500g via WAN or LAN ?

i would suggest you to turn it into 1 network: 1 subnet for all ip's
that should simplify it

yes of course one subnet will be easier, but for security reasons I want to use 2 networks.

all computers connected by LAN except the W98 which is using WLAN and DHCP. And of course there is no direct linkt between the .251.x network and the .252.x network. The link is done by the xp pro router.

I am a bit confused now.. if this doesn't work make a clear visio drawing please with IP's etc

add static route to the win2k machine for routing traffic 'back' to the wl500g

at this time it seems only to reach but can't follow it's way back as their is no route defined
