Have you tried the:
mtd erase nvram
mtd erase linux

Reason i have used all three of these:
nvram-clean.sh
wl500g-clear-nvram.trx
wl500g-recover.trx

yet it still retains old settings so i need to get serious and delete the nvram properly but in the open wrt website states that the mtd commands can brick your router.

edit: problem solved

use asus firmware restoration tool

1. install wl500g-clear-nvram.trx asus firmware restoration tool
2. install original asus firmware that came with the router this overwrites all existing settings.
3. Now install your choice of firmware this will be a fresh install
4. DONOT USE mtd it is just way to risky if you beg to differ leave a reply.
